The first step in rainwater collection is to catch the rain as it hits the roof.  Metal roofs and seamless gutters are preferred for rainwater collection.  After the rain is in the gutters, it is routed down a series of pipes to a filter to remove any debris.

One advantage of rainwater collection is that rainwater is already soft and doesn't need any additional processing.  In contrast, most wells in Central Texas require a water softener to reduce the hardness of the water to a reasonable level.

The rainwater collects in a tank where it is stored for later use.  When water is needed by the house, the stored rainwater is pressurized by a pump which feeds the entire house.

In some cases, rainwater collection systems are used for non-potable purposes.  In these cases, the rainwater may be used for watering plants and shrubs.   In many cases, rainwater is preferred over well water because of the hardness of the well water.   A rainwater collection system is ideal for these purposes.
